Solid wood. The good kind. The kind of wood that is basically extinct today. Trees that grew wild in the forest and had generations to become strong, weathered, and beautiful are almost a thing of the past.

Handcrafted details. Details that can't be replicated by a machine in a factory-- individually created by master craftsmen with a keen eye for detail.

Style that will withstand the test of time-- not a fad pumped out by a box store and quickly forgotten, but intentionally designed masterpieces. Classic lines, and carefully measured proportions that make each piece timeless.

Pieces that have absorbed generations of stories. The time Mom dropped the carving knife and nicked the top because she was laughing so hard. Worn finish around the edges from years of sticky fingerprints being wiped off the drawers. Character that is slowly grown and cannot be replicated.

Most of all- time. The time it took to grow the tree that the master craftsman spent hours creating into the piece that we found on a weekend spent hunting for special treasures the are caked with dust and in-replicable character. Believe me, we don't find them in the shape that we put them out on the shop floor that we've carefully arranged to make each piece shine. It takes time to bring a piece back to life- clean, glue, refinish or paint. Stage, photograph, edit and post.
We're all on a rescue mission, whether you're the one digging it out to restore or the one purchasing a restored piece and giving it a home. We've all managed to save it from the landfill for which it was headed.

You may not realize that you are also buying into your community by supporting a small business that fights to be there.

That is quite an investment. What a weekend! One thing you may or may not know about Timeless Trends Boutique is that we are a traveling shop. We do many shows throughout the MD, PA, VA region each year. Last year we did 8 shows! I think we had lost our marbles!

This is the first time we've done the DC Big Flea, and it was our first indoor show which was really nice! Smooth floors, no rain or snow, no 95 degree weather with a side of humidty! We did however miss the sun, and actually ended up missing the earths soft ground in exchange for a hard concrete floor to stand on. Luckily we brought a couch with us and took turns taking very comfortable lounge breaks- I think we need to remember to bring a couch more often!

All in all, the show brought in a crowd of people, and even had decent food and good coffee. They aren't kidding when they call this the DC Big Flea, because it is huge! Our booth was packed tight but I think we did a pretty nice job on staging, and we got many nice compliments. It's probably a good thing we got reminded early in the year how much work a show is. We might give ourselves a little break this time around and focus more time on making the shop look great and being creative. Here are a few pictures of our booth-
There really was a lot of cool stuff at the show, and we wished we could have spent a little more time walking around! All of the other vendors we met were very nice, and we enjoyed the sense of community. Although you may have to pay to get into this show, I don't think you'll be sorry. The wide array of upscale eclectic items makes this show truly unique!
I work so hard everyday to build my business and by the end of each year I generally feel like we've made progress. I mean we saw a 25% growth in our business by the end of 2014 which is a pretty big deal! Then January and February come, and they are always slow for us, but do I seriously have to go back to square one every January? Enough complaining right!?! So I find myself, along with other retailers, looking back to reflect on what is working and what is just taking up time or space. This leads me to the topic of "why we do events". In my opinion, having a retail store is no longer just a matter of setting up a beautiful store and hanging an "OPEN" sign on the door. Retailers must work much harder at getting customers in the door and events are a good way to do it.

We just held our "I Love Lucy" Valentines day tea and it was a blast. It was a complete sellout and the ladies had a great time. Shortly there after, I was talking with a fellow retailer that said she has given up on events because they are too costly and she does not get a good enough turn out. She then asked me about what we did and how we were making our events successful. My answer was, First, you have to make them fun for your customers!! People will come if they are going to have fun! The ladies that came to the tea had fun. About half of them participate in the costume contest because they love creating and wearing the costumes. The other half enjoy seeing the costumes but don't dress up and that's okay. They like having the afternoon to socialize with their friends and enjoy the food and refreshments.

Secondly, you don't have to do it all on your own. I almost always partner with a local restaurant or caterer who understands that they get exposure from partnering with me on the event. For example, when we have our ladies night event, the caterer provides enough food for say 50 people at a much lower flat rate fee. They do this because I am providing them with an avenue to sell their services to my customers at my event that I have advertised. So it is a give and take for both of us. Of course part of the deal is that they also put the word out to their customers about the event to bring me new customers too. Sometimes we have music at the event and while I tip the musicians they also realize it is an opportunity to sell themselves to my customer base. They are getting the exposure. When I hold an art show, which I only do with one artist at this point, she understands it not just about her hanging her artwork on my wall. If the show is to be successful she must advertise and bring people in the door as well. It is vital that you partner with local businesses that understand the relationship of sharing customers and promoting each other.

When you are planning an event for your store think about why you are having the event, and what you are bringing to your customers that is going to make it fun and worth their time to come. Set goals for attendance, sales, and business recognition. Then make a plan of how you will accomplish those goals. Set a budget and put together a project timeline. Make sure you choose a date far enough in advance so that you have enough time to put your plan in to action and be able to promote it. Do not cut yourself short on the timeline for promoting your event. If you do not properly promote the event you are letting your partners down as well as yourself.
On the day of the event, make sure your store is well stocked, you have enough help on hand and that your store looks its best. Then, put a smile on your face and have fun!Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720746569244412803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2532883325862978928.post-54874400080708744762015-02-11T08:44:00.001-08:002015-02-11T08:46:05.474-08:00Cameo Settee Redo with Paint! We are so excited to unveil this vintage cameo settee that got a funky and beautiful make over last week! We've had this piece in the shop for a while, and it's always sorta faded into the background of whatever setting we moved it to. It was just begging for the spotlight. It had great shape but the fabric felt sorta dingy, and the wood had cracks in it here and there. It's greatest asset was it's shape.

We decided in order for it to really shine it needed to pop! We have painted upholstered pieces before but never taken on a project this large. Nonetheless, we put our big girl panties on and decided to go for it! That's half the fun right?! Trying diving head first into something new?! Ha!

We decided to paint the couch yellow and grey– something a little funky but still pretty. We decided to paint the fabric first figuring it would be easier to cut in the frame than the fabric. As we applied the yellow paint to the fabric we thought, "Oh no...what have we gotten ourselves into? This really quite ugly!" We thought it was so ugly that we didn't even bother to take a picture of it, figuring it we would never even bother to share it. Yet, we had faith to push on.

There really wasn't much to share with this redo. We painted 1 coat of Miss Lillian's No-Wax Chock Paint in Antique Button on the fabric. We painted 1 coat of the same paint in Steel on the frame. We then sanded the whole thing down lightly to smooth it out– fabric and everything. Then waxed the entire thing with American Paint Company's clear wax.

We hadn't honestly expected the pattern underneath to show through so much. But sometimes the piece you're working on knows whats best, and you have to trust it. We love how it turned out!

Do you have any painted upholstery projects you can share with us? How about something you painted yellow and grey? We'd love for you to share, and we'll feature them on our facebook page!

-Enjoy!
We were having a hard time finding really well built pieces to offer to our clients. And, liked the idea that if we built them ourselves, we could customize the size, color and finish. Lucky for us, we have Chris on hand, who is not only a talented painted and re-finisher, but a builder too! We started by building our own farm tables from salvaged wood over the summer and have since been taking orders! The first one we used a barn door for the top and and old rope bed for the legs.

Each table has it's own character, as no two are exactly alike. The second table has gorgeous hand scraped oak boards for the top and old porch posts for legs.

The top is so beautiful on this one, you may have seen it in the shop during Christmas. It went quick! And finally, this was a really different project for us that left a lot of room for creativity! This client wanted a white cabinet with a screen door front and gingerbread trim.

We used old doors to build the frame, and a screen door that we've had in our stockpile for a while. It turned out really cute! We have a few upcoming projects that we'll be sharing over the next few weeks so stay tuned. And, let us know if you need a custom piece for your home! You deserve to have just what you're looking for.
To heck with that furry little Phil guy! Just because it isn't spring outside, doesn't mean you can't pretend it's spring inside. The best way to give your home a fresh springy feel is with florals- real or fake. Not only will flowers brighten up your home, it will freshen the air and ultimately lift your mood. And we can all use a winter pick-me-up! Flowers also offer a softness to your home similar to the way drapes do, but for less money and a lot less work.

Here are some our favorite examples that are inspiration and easy to achieve!
Since opening the shop in 2009, people have been telling me
I need to go to the Atlanta Home and Gift show, also known as AmericasMart. So
this year we decided to take the trip south! The frigid temps this winter might have played in to the decision. Being a SMALL business owner one of my fears
about attending this show is overspending. But one of the reasons we really wanted to go was to get a better look
at what was out there, and to see the latest trends in home fashion. The show takes place in three high rise
buildings 17-22 stories tall and all three full of show rooms and vendors. Knowing this, we decided to spend five days
at the show so we did not feel overly pressured to buy on first sight. Some of our tips coming from seasoned buyers were
to make a shopping plan for the store and to spend time just looking and
comparing prices. Both of those tips
turned out to be very valuable. We saw
merchandise that might be at several different vendors/show rooms at very
different prices. We wanted to make
sure to get our merchandise at the best price to bring it to our customers at
the best value.

We arrived Thursday early afternoon and for the better part
of that day we walked around in a daze just in awe of the sheer number of
vendors and the diversity and volume of merchandise. So the tip to have a shopping plan for the Boutique
was key otherwise it is easy to get distracted by the plethora of products you
can fall in love with but have nothing to do with who we are and what our shop
is. We spent a good part of the day figuring out the lay of the land.

We
tried to keep to the plan of searching out the best products for OUR boutique,
taking notes, sneaking a few pictures and mapping out the vendors to revisit
and place orders. We were looking for the new and upcoming design trends to bring back with us. We saw lots of furniture in shades of grey with a pop of color such as a golden yellow (ochre) or cobalt blue paired with very natural materials. Farm tables were definitely still trending and our custom built tables are priced below wholesale prices!! Jewel tones for spring bags are going to be the trend mixed with bold geometric shapes.
These bold geometric shapes in black on beige or grey are a definitely trend in home fashion. The mix of rustic metals with natural woods was everywhere and gold is coming back is especially in mirrors and jewelry! The other big trend in jewelry was long necklaces with vintage style pendants.
We saw lots of retro clocks in bold colors mixed with chrome. Mid-century and large glass container style lighting seemed to be everywhere. In our search for spring home and garden, we saw a lot of woodsy/whimsy mixed in with natural materials. As for Christmas, look for the trend to remain very woodsy but a bit more dressed
up with a lot more gold mixed in. Overall everything felt nature inspired from the jewelry to home decor
with natural materials mixed in for a reclaimed look!!
By day three it was time to get serious; stay focused and start writing orders. We visited several of the show rooms of some
of our regular vendors (ones we purchase from regularly at the shop) and then went to
the temporaries to fill in with lots of new merchandise. This should be a good spring! And yes, we already had to do our Christmas shopping
for next year! We are very excited
about our theme for the holidays in 2015 and can’t wait to show it to you in
November!!

Over all it was a great experience! We learned a lot and best of all we met some
of the friendliest people. The ladies
that served up breakfast at the hotel greeted us every morning as if we were
long lost relatives showing up at their place for breakfast. The shuttle drivers made you feel like they
were happy to see you every time they picked you up. People we met along the way in the shuttle,
at the show or in a bar or restaurant all wanted to know where we were visiting
from and what kind of shop we had. They
offered good tips, shared their meals with us and made me fall in love all over
again with the human race! So will we do
it again? – Probably! Would we do
anything differently? – Probably! What
was the best part about going? – The people we met and the excitement about
products we selected to bring back to you!!

So where do I begin this story? One of our most loyal customers came to us with a project. She had been on the hunt for a vintage bar to put in her basement family room. It needed to be something really special that had a time warn appearance. It is a very large room so she wanted this bar to be 9 feet long! She had been admiring some of our custom built farm tables and wanted us to use some of our vintage lumber to make the top with one of Chris' special dark stains.

So we set out on the road looking for just the right salvaged lumber to make the top all the while plotting and planning on how to make the cabinet. I have to say, looking for salvage lumber brings you in to contact with some very interesting characters. It is different than looking for great furniture finds to set out on the floor or to paint. And even Chris who has known some pretty interesting characters in his life found one of our contacts to be a pretty scarey guy. Funny thing the guy really turned out to be ok (we think). At least he was ok to us so who are we to judge - right? But when someone lives in an abandoned motel you just have to wonder. Anyway, we got some pretty good materials from motel man, but Chris just was not quite satisfied so I called up our favorite picker - Mr. Layman. I have mentioned him before. He is my favorite person to talk to in the world of picking. He always greets you with a smile, is proud to be in his 80's and is in the most romantic relationship with his wife of many many years. Anyway back to the hunt for salvaged lumber. Well Mr. L had the mother load for us! We had to make two trips out but what we got was well worth the trips. Plus I got to talk to him twice in one week!!

The plan for the build was complete (not on paper of course but Chris assured me he had a plan). We gathered up some 5 panel doors and he got to work with some help from my Hubby (and the master carpenter turned apprentice to son). With a lot of scraping, some cuts, some beats and bangs and wah-lah the cabinet was together. And oh my gosh the top was amazing even before Chris did the finish work!
The customer wanted a turquoise color that looked aged so we used Miss Lillians No Wax Paint color "Ocean Depths" and then put a dark wax over it. I did tell you it was 9 feet long right? Our work room is on the second floor - right! Heavy -right! Yeah so my work horse husband and Chris carried it down the steps; loaded it in the trailer along with the amazing top and strapped it down. We delivered it to the customer, set it up in her basement and brought her downstairs. She cried!! Ha Ha - I told you it is that freaking beautiful!! And then we had Thanksgiving dinner. Yep that loyal customer is my sister! It was great to deliver it while the whole family was there to see it, and she cried because it is amazing and her nephew built it for her.
Happy story - Happy Life - Happy Thanksgiving!Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720746569244412803noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2532883325862978928.post-29752195518256265752014-10-17T06:31:00.000-07:002014-10-17T06:47:51.811-07:00Custom Born on the 4th Side TableYou may or may not know, one of the services we offer at the Boutique is custom painted pieces. We will custom paint a piece you previously own or purchase from us to match your decor. It is often that you may find, or currently own, a piece of furniture that is already the perfect size, shape or style for your home. But it may not be the perfect color. Or perhaps the wood is not quite right. Maybe, you just don't like it anymore and it needs a fresh look that will grab your attention when you walk in the room! Whatever the case may be, we have just the right touch to turn drab into fab. And let's be honest, we don't all have the time to DIY.

That was the case for this lovely little side table with the cool black metal claw feet. A customer of ours had it and needed it painted to match her decor. She wanted American Paint Company's Born on the 4th, with Sackcloth glaze to give it texture and depth.

So I began painting...

I chose to use this round brush because it works great for leggy things and it worked well for getting into all of the nooks and crannies of this detailed table. Two coats of blue and I let it dry.

This table was a light colored wood to start, and the customer wanted an
aged look but didn't want too much of that bright wood showing
underneath. So I used a fine grit sandpaper to lightly sand and distress the table. We decided to sand first and then glaze over top to blend and darken where the wood showed through. Next, I mixed together some Sackcloth and clear glaze and got to work. I'd paint a leg and then use a dry cloth to wipe away the excess and give a more natural aged look. Glaze is great for adding depth to a pieces and to highlight details.
Lastly I waxed the table using a mixture of clear and dark wax to again, add an aged look and to darken up where the wood showed through. First I clear waxed; then lightly dabbed my brush in the excess wax on the lid and blended it into clear wax where needed. Finally I buffed!
I must say, American Paint Company makes awesome waxes! They go on SO smooth and are honestly the easiest waxes I've ever worked with. They buff to a really nice sheen too. Waxing can be tricky, but APC wax definitely takes the stress out of it.
Quite honestly, I was scared. I've never really thought of myself as a teacher, and I tend to become inarticulate when I'm nervous. Not exactly the best quality for a teacher to have! Nonetheless, I wrote out my lesson plan with everything I wanted to cover and practiced what I wanted to say, and just went for it! That's generally what I do when I don't know what I'm doing, anyway!

So we got our space all set up and anxiously waited for our students!
After a quick introduction of myself, the paint line and our students, we talked about prepping furniture before painting. Then we dove right in! Each of our students brought unique tables except for our employee, Rachel, who brought in a neat bench with only the frame area needing painting. They were all excited about learning the craft and bravely jumped in!
Once the painting commenced, I felt much less nervous and things were moving along smoothly! And all of the pieces were coming along great! We talked about brushes, painting techniques, and coverage. The ladies all had great questions and I really hope that I was able to make them feel comfortable about painting furniture on their own.

We also experimented with using APC awesome waxes and their metallic Mica on pieces of trim in between coats of paint. Some got more finished than others, but everyone did a great job and hopefully had as much fun as I did! It was exciting to overcome my fear of teaching while watching our students overcome their fears of painting!
We will hold advanced classes for students who have been to our Basic Workshop or who have experience painting. We will have more Basic workshops for those who do not have experience and would like to learn. Wow! It is hard to believe I have been at this for
five years now. We kicked it off this weekend with a super anniversary
sale and I was so happy to see everyone that came out for it! I look
back at some of the photos from our first month open and think how bare
the store looked.
Going
to my first gift show to place orders was so overwhelming and to this
day is not one of my favorite things to do. Believe it or not I am not a
shopper! Going from vendor to vendor trying to think ahead to
Christmas (or whatever upcoming season) just hoping that what I purchase is
what our customers will like for their homes is very
stressful. The fun part for me is when the merchandise arrives and we
start setting it up on the floor.
How
we obtain our vintage merchandise and furniture is much more fun! I
love going to auctions especially when my family comes along. Believe
it or not my husband is the true shopper in the family and he likes to

the most fun, the most work and it seems they fall on the hottest

Over the years we have
established relationships with other pickers and because of the time
element involved with auctions, we have narrowed it down to just a few
auctions a year. Mr. Layman is one of our favorite pickers
to go see. He is the sweetest elderly gentleman farmer you would ever
want to meet and his marriage is such a love story. I love to hear him
talk about his wife and their life together! We have other folks too
that come to us at the store now to let us know of great pieces they
have for sale which makes the time spent acquiring antiques and vintage
furniture a bit more productive.

It
took Mary and me a while to convince the guys in our family that we
needed to paint some of the furniture. But we got them on board and you
all have really shown an appreciation for our custom work! It is
always interesting to see how a piece of furniture speaks to us. We may
start out with a plan or color scheme for a piece but once you start
working with it, the piece lets you know what is going to look best and
it maybe something completely different from the initial plan. Those
pieces seem to turn out best and leave the store the fastest!

share it, and to share the before and after photos with a little
bit of what happened in the middle. So I started with a pair of these
queen anne style night stands or end tables up in the work room waiting to get painted. They were a little
scratched up but for the most part in good shape. A customer came in and fell in love with them. Her mom knew just how much she wanted them and sneakily bought them as a gift for her. See, there really is all kinds of goodness out there folks!! So I contacted the lucky lady and had her come in and pick out what colors she wanted them to be painted.

Disregard all the clutter in this photo. My work room stays cluttered. I wish I knew how to keep a neat and tidy workspace that is perfect for photographing but it just is not happening!! These pieces had a good amount of shine to them so I decided to give Miss Lillians - "Uncle Jeff Swamp Mud" a try as a base coat. It was my first time using it and I must say- I LOVE this stuff.

Once the mud was painted on and dried (which did not take long at all) it was time for the first coat. The customer had brought in some pictures with an idea of what she wanted. The base of the table was to be in Miss Lillian's No-Wax Sterling with the drawer front and top painted in Miss Lillian's Snowflake white. Here we go....

Kind of cute but just not quite there yet. So I talked to the customer about adding some glaze. She agreed to White Glaze followed by Silver Shimmer Glaze on the top and drawer front and we agreed on Ebony Glaze over the Sterling. The original hardware was shiny brass so I brushed it with the Ebony Glaze and then painted it with Onyx. Once it had dried, I just dabbed on the silver paste wax.

Here is the finished product! I wish I had more time to stage them for the photos but I was late making the delivery to the customer. Honestly, I am surprised I remember to take a picture at each stage!

And if I was really good at this, I would a picture of the very happy young lady that received these as a gift. Enjoy!!

One more note - the Miss Lillian's products were great to work with on this project. It cut down on time, mess and labor and the finish product was just what the customer had wanted. Check them out in our shop the next time you are in for a visit.

After much research and product testing we have launched our second paint line! We are very pleased to offer clay/chalk/mineral based paint from the American Paint Company. This company offers an all natural, zero VOC, eco-friendly, and solvent free paint. It is the cleanest, healthiest paint and finishes on the market. Not only is it safe and user friendly, we have found it to be a great product to use. I love the transformation of these pieces using this soft, appealing color LIBERTY on the frame.

The pieces took the paint very well with full coverage in a single coat. The old finish had started to bubble which is a texture I love to work with. Just a little bit of light sanding brings out the texture and gives a distressed look that really feels authentic. I still have the bed to finish but it gives you a good idea of what these two pieces used to look like. It seems I tend to get a little to excited when starting a project and forget to take the before photos!

We have a full stock of the colors the company offers as well as their waxes and top coat. It's truly amazing what a little paint can do to an give an old piece of furniture new life!
We had to do it in three sections moving everything from section to section so it took a good bit more time. Mostly though the weather has been the biggest hold up. The concrete (not room temperature) had to be over 50 degrees and this winter just won't go away! Plus it needs to be pretty much moisture free and we are now in to early spring which means RAIN!!

In addition to painting the floor, the foundation inside the warehouse has a nice fresh coat of moisture barrier paint in a bright white. My hubby and son painted most of it and it did not look comfortable. They sat, they squatted and even tried laying down but apparently there is not a comfortable position for painting a foundation wall. Makes me really appreciate my work table for painting furniture! Most all of the walls have been covered in peg board painted white. I know, peg board is not my favorite either. Due to the materials used in the construction of the warehouse, the pegboard will make it much easier (and quicker) for hanging beautiful mirrors, funky and functional shelves and other wall decor. Plus putting a new hole in the wall every time you need to hang something begins to look worse than the peg board over time.
It just did not quite have the feel we wanted and the ugly grey commercial carpet had to go. So we enlisted the help of KC (my wonderful son-in-law) Andrew (my son) and of course my hubby. He is the one who makes sure I go the extra steps to get it done right. Or as I see it, he comes up with more work for us to do then the schedule allows. LOL

First step was to move everything from one section of the warehouse to the other. Then the nasty carpet had to be pulled up and then simply paint. Sounds simple - right?! Well painting the floor was the only simple part. Once the carpet was out of the way we had to scrape the floor, sweep it with a good stiff broom and then vacuum it and then vacuum it again! This is our good friend Diana vacuuming. :-)

Picking out the color was easy enough but getting the color mixed and picking the right product was something else. Lets just say we met the most interesting man working at our local store who spoke very fast in a heavy french accent. I had the deer in the head lights look on my face throughout the conversation and kept saying to Mary (my daughter) "what'd he say??", "did you get that?". He would speak and I would turn and look at her with this big fat "?" plastered all over my face. Several HOURS later we left with 4 gallons of paint! We chose Seal Krete Epoxy Seal which is available at Lowes and recommended by our new found French Friend!

This being the winter that just won't end, left us only one day warm enough to get the floor painted but here is a first glimpse of the one section completed. Now we just have to repeat that several times to get the entire floor painted!!

more to come as there is still a lot more to do....
After all, we are not the party store - right? But Timeless Trends Boutique is located in a small rural town of close knit friends and families. So when we put on an event, we make it an opportunity to provide a fun evening for our Timeless Trends friends and family! It is our time to say thank you for supporting us. Plus, it's a chance for our friends to bring their friends to show them why they are loyal customers of the boutique, why it is worth maybe driving a few extra minutes to find us, and to shop all the wonderful treasures we hold in the store.

The Ladies Night- Jewelry Show we just held was an opportunity for the vendors to meet our wonderful customers. They enjoyed talking with them and finding out what they like and what they want to see more of in the jewelry lines.

But for the most part it is just our way of saying thanks and giving this quiet little town an opportunity to get out and socialize, relax and maybe run in to a friend they have not seen in a while.

In return it seems our customers show their appreciation for these events by coming back time and again and with the purchases they make during the event. Sure we could probably put an ad in the newspaper for the cost of the event but that does not reflect our style. We are and always have been all about the people and these events give us a chance to spend time with our peeps!!

Thanks to everyone who came this past Saturday! We hope you had fun and will be back to see us soon!!Virginiahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/12720746569244412803noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2532883325862978928.post-3677056100608021582013-11-04T18:44:00.000-08:002013-11-04T18:44:09.508-08:00The simple pleasures of tea!You know someone once told me having the chance to serve others was a blessing and a priviledge! Everytime we have all the ladies in for one of our teas at Timeless Trends Boutique, I completely understand why that statment is so very true. We take great pride in providing an afternoon of good fun, conversation and of course scrumptious food and a great cup of tea! This October we had the "Mad Hatter" tea and as you can see, many of the ladies got in to the theme of it.
Virginia Crum and her folks know how to do shows well. She does a great job promoting and makes the sign up and setup part of the show effortless for the vendors. We had a fantastic spot, the weather was perfect and we had history to go on for what to bring to the Chartreuse fans. So I think we might be learning how to do this show stuff. Either that or the we just got lucky with great weather, a great venue and fantastic people all the way around. We had been a vendor earlier this year at the Spring Market Days at Chartreuse and I was excited to see some of the other vendors we had met in the spring. So remember this buffet from our last show??
Well it was one of the first items we sold this time around and then we sold another buffet in the store to a customer from the show!! Another favorite item were our lanterns and candle sticks. Doing shows is a lot of work and I have to call in the whole family to help but I love doing them and meeting so many new people. Hopefully they like what we had enough to come visit our boutique in Thurmont or the Vintage Warehouse which is open this coming weekend!
This past weekend we headed off to Lucketts, VA to participate in the flea market at The Hummingbirds Nest. It was the weekend of the Lucketts' Fair - another flea market and we were pretty excited! Mary came home to join in on all the work that goes in to doing one of these events. I even ordered a new tent!! We scrambled to get our show pieces done particularly this gorgeous buffet!
We loaded up two truck loads and my suburban with great stuff and headed down the road! Once there we got a great spot and started setting it all up. The weather was gorgeous!!! The tent went up without any problems and the booth space was over flowing with all our treasures and works! Now we just needed customers. :-)
One of my favorite things about these events is meeting other vendors. This time we go super lucky to be setting up next to Karen. She was new to the junking scene and was so excited to be there. We had a lovely time chatting and sharing trade secrets! I wish her all the luck and hope she soon comes to see us! All in all it was a good weekend. I got to spends some down time chatting with my daughter, Mary and just chillin in the summer breeze!! you did on your summer vacation? Well I thought I would share - not
that we do anything out of the ordinary. For as long as my kids can
remember there was only one place to go on vacation - the beach! Yep,
we may have changed how we went (we use to camp) but they knew our
vacation would be on a beach and most likely that beach was going to be
Cherry Grove, SC. This year we had to shorten it a bit but managed to
get away for a five day weekend down to my favorite beach.

However,
we woke to clouds and the possibility of rain on Sunday. So what does
any good junker do?? Yep - the computer was out and in no time, I found
an amazing auction just 45 minutes north in the lovely southern city of
Wilmington, NC. Can I just say I have never seen so much quality
furniture at a single auction?! I entered the auction house and I
actually think I heard angels singing. HA! My husband on the other
hand heard "Uh-oh". Lucky for him we did not have the furniture trailer
with us. Within no time at all, I had picked out about 10 pieces of
furniture to bring home with me. Alas, only this gorgeous buffet made
it in to the suburban and back home with us. But no worries, I now know
that not only can I visit my favorite beach more often, but it can now
be turned in to a business trip and I will definitely be bringing a
trailer with me next time!!

It was our second appearance at the Funky Flea at the Pink Cabbage and
it was definitely hotter than last year!! We sanded, polished, hunted, packed
and priced!! We bid, and dug and dragged out all the best goodies to
bring to our fans in Ellicott City, MD.

The week leading up to the flea
we had a family graduation party, then the Memorial Day Auction
(another hot one!) and an open house at the boutique to support the
Main Street Events in Thurmont (our home site). In between all of that,
we were working on all the furniture pieces to take to the flea! But
Friday morning we picked up the U-haul trailer and loaded that bad boy
up along with the pickup truck. We went to bed tired but excited to get
to the event early Saturday morning. Early - because we wanted to get setup before the 90 degree heat set in!!

Many of the ladies remembered us from the year before and we
also met a lot of new faces. Jody and the ladies from the Pink Cabbage
made sure the setup went smoothly and were so kind to us making sure we
kept hydrated!! In the end many of our furniture pieces found new homes.
We even found a few pieces to bring home and rework into fabulous new
designs which should be making an appearance this weekend at the
Vintage Warehouse! All in a days work, right!?

To get to the ground hog day story, we must start with a trip to
On-a-Whim in Lucketts, VA, back in December where I struck up a
conversation with Donna, the owner. We got to talking about owning
businesses and our holiday seasons and such, and Donna very warmly invited
us to participate in their annual Ground Hog Day sale. I said, "In
February! - Outside!". She reassured me that it was one of their best
sales and that people would come out for it. I said again,
"Outside...in February!" She chuckled and again assured me it would be
worth it. So we started making a plan to attend. I decided we would
brave the cold and do the show as long as it did not snow.

The
weather man predicted unseasonably warm weather the few days before the
date of the show and then back to normal winter temperatures (40
degrees). I could live with that but...he was a little off. We arrived
late Thursday afternoon to 30 mile an hour winds and temps around 27
degrees. Fricken COLD!! Ha! Ha!

But my daughter, Mary and son, Chris
were real troopers and helped me get things setup. They even went
dumpster diving in these frigid temperatures so we could get some wood
to put the furniture up on to keep it off the damp ground. As you can
see from these pictures - it snowed! Thank you weather man for keeping
us very well informed! Friday, the wind continued to blow around 25
miles an hour and the temps hovered around 27. Saturday - IT SNOWED
again and the temperature wavered between 19 and 22 degrees!

We were certainly frozen, but in the end
we are glad we participated as we met lots of new people who were very
excited to hear about Timeless Trends Boutique. We look forward to
seeing them soon - hopefully under warmer conditions! Thank you again
Donna for inviting us and we wish you all the best in 2013.
