Wow! It has been such a busy couple of weeks!! Last weekend was Colorfest and we had so many wonderful people visit the boutique and vintage warehouse. You all seemed to love our furniture because a whole lot of it went home with many different people. And, Halloween is in full swing at the shop with fun decorations for indoors and out. One of my favorites are the metal sculptured witches made from recycled metal! And if that is not enough to keep us busy we are hosting a tea next week. It sold out in three days so I guess we will have to think about doing another one before Christmas!. I feel so blessed to have such a loving and supportive family. We have the best customers and so much support from everyone!

Technical Pain

So technology can be a wonderful thing..sometimes...and sometimes a technical pain raises its ugly head just when you really don't need it. Like when you send your newsletter out and at that same time, you realize that no one can get to your website! But from that and through the pain and aggravation of it opens a window of what I am referring to as "dramatic design and technical beauty. And what is "it?" you might be asking...

A beautifully designed and much cleaner website. It certainly helped that a wonderfully talent graphic artist develop a great design for us over a year ago and that I also have a wonderfully talented and patient daughter who is finishing up graphic design studies (always nice to reap rewards from tuition dollars!). So working with the design and being extremely patient with some very limited web tools, she worked and tweaked and even took some of my suggestions to put it all together and we have now launched our new website!

Lets go shopping

Shopping for the store is fun, always educational and quite stressful. Stressful you say? How can shopping be stressful? It is all about finding the right mixture of old and new products that you, our favorite customers are gonna love and want!! The tail end of that sentence is where the stress comes from. What if I love it but no one else does? How much of it are our customers going to want? What color is best? Will it all fit in the shop....and so on....and so on!

It seems our latest shopping trip was a hit! This beautiful cupboard only lasted 3 days before it was snapped up! But not to worry there are more great new pieces of furniture on the floor from our latest buying excursions like the matching book shelf which by the way is stocked with a new shipment of our most luxurious soaps and lotions.

Guest Room Essentials

Coming from a large family, we are frequently having overnight guests. Sometimes I have plenty of notice and other times a visit just leads in to an overnight stay. It was during one of these visits that I vowed to have my guest room essentials at the ready. With our children growing up and moving on, I am now able to actually have a designated guest room. However, many people find that they are quickly having to turn a kids room in to a guest room for a night or two which can be easily and comfortably done without too much effort.

First and foremost is the bed or sleeping arrangements. Of course you want to provide as comfortable a bed as possible for your guest. But, whatever you are converting into your guest sleeping quarters, make sure you provide clean, fresh linens and pillows. In my case, I have designated certain pillows, sheets and bed covers specifically for when guests are visiting. There is nothing worse than having to sleep on a stinky teenage boy’s pillow and blanket. Sorry boys but its true…you grow funk at night. If possible, hang your guest linens outside to get them good and fresh; if you can’t do this, a tumble in the dryer with half a dryer sheet will do the trick…nothing too fully scented as many people are bothered by strong scents. I also like to freshen up the room by opening the windows and turning on the ceiling fan for a bit during the day prior to their arrival!

Second, try and remove most of the clutter from the room (stuffed toys off the bed, laundry and shoes put away). Having a cleared night stand next to the bed with a pretty vase or candle is a nice touch. Try covering the table with a decorative clothe or pretty scarf. If you have a spare clock put it in the room but not one of those ticking things. It will drive your guest nuts!

Third, put a spare chair or stool in the room, to allow your guests somewhere to sit and/or to place their suitcase. I also keep a hook on the back of the door for hanging items. The hook keeps my guest’s items visible and they wind up with less items left behind.

Other items you will want to put out for your guests are a coaster and fresh glass of ice water, some magazines or books of interests and putting out fresh towels and a pretty bar of soap is a must and will let your guest know you are trying to make them comfortable.

Just before going to bed, always ask your guests if they have everything they need. I let them know where the makings for coffee are or try to have the coffee pot made up and scheduled to come on in the morning.

Timeless Trends gets a Facelift!

A few of our local shoppers may have noticed recently that the Timeless Trends Boutique has received a facelift! Originally Creager Furniture Store, the building was built and purchased by James Creager around 1897. The Creager Furniture and Undertakers was the original name of the family business which was run by the Creager family. The business was renamed to “M.L Creager Furniture and Undertakers” after James’ son Martin Luther Creager took over upon James’ death in 1900. The Creager family continued to run “M.L. Creager Furniture and Undertakers” throughout much of the 20th century, eventually separating the funeral home from the furniture store. The funeral home was sold in 1977, but James Creager’s two granddaughters, Mary Ellen and Clara Jean continued to operate the Creager Furniture Store until 1987, when it was sold to Ken and Lois Fraley. The Fraley’s continued to operate it under the same name (a nod to tradition) until 2003. The building was vacant for several years until myself and my husband purchased it late in 2007.

We've made quite a few updates to this Thurmont landmark. A new roof was immediately put into place to prevent further water damage and the original floors were restored by our son Chris LaRoche. Most recently a fresh coat of paint was applied to the front of the building, which caught the attention of many of the folks around town, and people have popped into the boutique just to tell us how much they like the new look! In the tradition of the Creager family, our boutique is still very much a family run business – my entire family (husband and kids!) have all worked on getting the building back in shape so that the old Creager Furniture Store building can continue to be a historic business landmark in Thurmont! In recent months, the old carriage house, located behind the building has been put to use to hold our monthly Vintage Warehouse Sale!

Holiday Open House

Is it just us or is hard to believe that it’s November already? With the Holidays right around the corner, we have lots going on at the Timeless Trends Boutique and wanted to take a minute to let you all know what we’ve been up too!

On Saturday, November 6th we had our Holiday Open House! We put a lot of time into preparing for this event and it was fun getting the shop ready for the holidays! The Holiday Open House was set to start at 5:30 pm. So, at 5:00 pm, we briefly closed the shop to bring out all of our decorated trees [We had trees decorated with glass ornaments, trees decorated with beautiful birds, a red, white, and gold themed tree – there’s just so many ways to decorate a tree for the holidays! If you are undecided about how to decorate your tree – let us know! We’re happy to help!]. We also hid gifts in different parts of the store for our guests to find! These hidden gifts were a big hit! People started coming in at 5:30 ready to shop, snack and fill out their holiday wish lists!

We sold a lot of our holiday items but we also had a lot of people shopping for Christmas gifts and home items (furniture, rugs, home furnishings, etc). During the holidays, people are always wanting to spruce up their home for when guests come over, so we weren’t surprised to see so many shoppers purchasing home décor and furnishings! We also offer holiday home decorating to our customers, so let us know if you’re interested in that and we can send you information! A big thanks to everyone who came out for our Holiday Open House! This coming weekend, November 13th and 14th, we have our Vintage Warehouse Sale! We’ve got lots of great items in our Warehouse and have added new pieces to the inventory since last month’s sale. We have old tables, some really beautiful chairs, school desks, trunks and much more! Some of the items are even decorated for an old fashioned Christmas! We’d love to see you out there this coming weekend!

Pillows - simple tool to make a big change.

Pillows are a great way to make a change to a room without spending a whole lot of money and without too much effort. They can change the look and feel of a room or piece of furniture from casual to formal and vice versa. These wonderful canvas pillows are a new addition to the boutique. The elegant bird motifs are a sign of prosperity and good fortune. They are not only beautiful but very comfortable and the canvas material is durable and very easy to maintain.

We have many styles of pillows in the boutique. Some are handmade, beautiful victorian style pillows. While others are bold and more modern such as this beautiful, rectangle, black and white baroque pillow.

Many of our word pillows are fun gifts and make the perfect hostess or get well gift. They can let someone know how much you care or be a simple statement of interests.

Timeless Trends New Arrival and a Flavorful Favorite!

We have received a few new furniture pieces this week and this little, two drawer server is one of them. It has great patina, spindled legs and original hardware. A great mahogany piece!

You may also like to get some of our flavor Harney & Sons tea. The pomegranate and winter white earl grey with a hint of vanilla are two of my favorites!!

Saturday Stroll In Thurmont

The inaugural Saturday Stroll event went off without a hitch. We have a great group of people working on these events to make them a success. The theme for the July event was "Summer Beach Party" and Nancy Poss, our Main Street Manager came up with some great themed prizes and gifts.

Many people stopped in the boutique during the event. Several of the people I met were from out of town. They had either read about it online, seen it in a newspaper or some just happened to be going through town and stopped.

I would like to send a big THANK YOU to all of our visiting table vendors. These folks braved the heat and setup along main street to sell their art and craft items and other business services. Everyone seemed to have great time strolling and shopping.

The Free Rita's Ice was a big hit in the late afternoon along with the music at Mechanicstown Park on the town square.

Tammy Green and the ladies from PNC worked hard to have some fun activities for children - I think their fingers are still sore from all of the cutting of craft supplies. The day seemed to be enjoyed by the yound and old!

Come visit us for the next Saturday Stroll, August 28th 1:00 - 5:00 pm. The theme for this event is "Stuff a Back Pack". There will be opportunities for school age children to get free school supplies. For those who do not have school age children, they can donate their stuffed pack back to Thurmont First, Inc. and they will be given to children in need of supplies. We will once again have great shopping at the local merchants and also along Main Street with visiting vendors and...Kona Ice will be here too!

Painted Wash Stand

This charming little wash stand is one of this week's new arrivals at Timeless Trends Boutique. It came in from Kris, one of our newest vendors who has a real talent for painting furniture. It is done up in an antique white using milk paint with a light waxing. The hand made quilted throw hanging on the towel bar is also fairly new to the shop and was created by another one of our talented vendors. There are many more new pieces like these in the shop this week so be sure to stop in and have a look.

Speaking of stopping in, be sure and come up this Saturday, July 31st for Thurmont's Main Street's Saturday Stroll Event. It is the first in a series of three...which are occurring on the last Saturday of July, August and September from 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm. There will be artisans and vendors along the "Main Street" area; restaurant specials, entertainment and more. The July event has a beach party them with fun summer prizes. And...who love's Rita Italian Ice? More like who doesn't!! There will be FREE Rita Ice from 3:00 - 5:00 pm while supplies last!

Cool Water Fountains

The sound of water has been proven to soothe and relax. I have been looking for just the right fountains to carry in the shop and these relaxing table top, falling water fountain are beautiful to look at and perfect for relaxing after a long day. Dreams Really Do Come True

Today was a very exciting day! Making the plans and dreaming the dreams for this little place called Timeless Trends Boutique has really been a wonderful, terrible, exciting, terrifying and educational experience. And.... now that the very scary, snowy month of February had passed... two of my little dreams have come true.

One occurred last Saturday. I dreamed of the day when the shop would be crowded...with enough people that you actually heard chatter, and movement and felt the energy of people excited as they discovered new and unique things in the shop. Last Saturday... it actually occurred. We had a crowd! Now remember, the shop is not that big and with all the stuff we have in it a crowd means 8-10 people in the shop, all at one time! AND...for no particular reason. We were not having a special event; it was not colorfest weekend; and there was not a big sale...they were just there on their own accord. It was very exciting!

And today, another one of my little dreams came true. When I arrived at the shop this morning, there were people there...waiting...waiting for me to open the doors so that they could come in and shop in my shop! Imagine the thrill! This must sound so silly to many of you but it's when these little dreams occur that you realize... You're making it! You are building a wonderful small business, all of your own and that is what we people, who brave this economy, and work relentless hours and dream silly dreams, live for!

So thank you for coming to our shop, shopping online and making the dream come true.

An Inspiring Saturday

It was very inspiring yesterday to have so many visitors to the shop. Laura Meredith the featured designer arrived first and got all setup and ready to answer the design challenges. Jan Flynn was the first to sign up for an in home consultation. It will be exciting to see the before and after pictures.

We also had a great visit with artists Janie Moltrup and Elizabeth Prongas, who came in to help plan our spring art show. Mark your calendars for this event. The show opening will be April 16th.

Snow vs. Jewelry ...

The day started off great yesterday for our 1st Jewelry Show. After getting everything prepared in the shop and welcoming our 5 local artisans, we began seeing the morning customers. Mid-day we got an unexpected visit from "old Man Winter" with a bit of a snow storm (even though it was predicted the snow would staty south of us)... he came anyway with about 5-6" of snow.

Our jewelers stayed positive and hung in for the day with us. Considering the snow, we were quite suprised by the number of folks that stopped in to enjoy the beautiful works of art from each designer. It was a fun day in spite of the Wintery weather and our customers were pleasantly suprised with the variety of the jewelry. Look for a follow up show - probably in May, when there is little to no chance of snow.

Heartly House serves Frederick County residents who have been impacted by domestic violence, sexual assault, and child abuse.

Colorfest - Next Weekend!

Have you been to Colorfest? It's HUGE, with over 200,000 people coming to our quaint town of Thurmont, Maryland, on October 10 & 11, walking throughout 350 juried arts & crafts vendors. Hours are 9 am - 5 pm and it's free!

This year's annual event, it's 46th, began in 1963 as a nature walk and quickly evolved into a juried arts and crafts show featuring well known and respected artists from across the U.S. and has become one of the largest shows on the East Coast.

Come by and see us at our new shop, Timeless Trends Boutique, an electic gifts and home furnishings boutique; we will be open during Colorfest with special hours -- 9 am - 5 pm -- on Saturday and Sunday.

19th Century Pinned Top Farm Table

Picture this 19th century pinned top farm table in your kitchen. This unique piece has a three board top set on a straight legged frame. The warn washed top has the wearings and grooves to prove its age. Also pictured is a lovely delft vase, redware pottery, signed cowden crock with lid and two blue/white salt glazed bowls and a very early large wooden bowl. Two in One

Here are two beauties in one. The magnificent corner cabinet is late 1800's. It's raised panel doors and double plate rail only add to its uniqueness. The blue willow in the cabinet is a truely awesome set with numerous serving pieces and service for 12. Each place setting includes: dinner plate, soup bowl, berry bowl, bone dish, dessert plate and cup and saucer.

Opening Day was a blast! We had just enough customers to keep us entertained while we worked out the kinks in our systems. I really appreciate everyone who stopped in to see us. Also special thanks to my great friend Pat Salaverri who has worked long hard hours with me over the past few weeks to help me realize this dream. Andrew Thomas.... you've been great running, moving, cleaning and whatever else we have asked you to do. To my darling husband....I can not thank you enough. After working long hours you have been there late in to the night getting all those last minute things done for me. Keeping in mind that last minutes turned in to last hours. Ouch! Love to all of my children who have supported me and put in a lot of sweat equity getting this place ready. Hope to have more pictures posted soon.

The past few weeks have been really busy with receiving new merchandise, cleaning and moving in the antiques and working with local artist to get some really great work for the shop. I have had many helping hands from friends and family. This would not be happening if it weren't for them. Thank you all!! Some of the items recently added is a mid 1900c, 1 gallon, dragonfly stoneware jug. This beautiful print of a vintage oil painting titled "Octobre".This pair of terrific windsor chairs were from a Pennsylvania estate and they are in mint condition!
And, from our new and unique table top decor... this pair of lovely fabric and lace eye glass holder and make-up brush set.

Progress of the shop

Still working away on the shop. Everyday new merchandise arrives and we still have furniture to get ready!! Whew this has been a long week but the antiques are looking great as well as the vintage linens, and jewelry. I got my computer with cash drawer! I have wanted a cash register since I was a kid and it makes me laugh to think how excited I am to have one now! The POS software is great but it is a huge task trying to get all of the items entered in to the database and then priced and checked in... Working on that has been harder than any of the other work so far, not the moving of furniture, or all of the painting. And, to think I use to sit in front of a computer all day! Ouch! I will post more shop pictures this weekend but have to get back to the inventory work for now.

Here are a few peeks in to the shop. Which is kind of funny since we covered all of the windows to build anticipation in the local
traffic until the "big reveal". It has been busy around here. We finished the painting and cleaning and have started bringing in the goodies. There is lots more work to do but the Timeless Trends Boutique is starting to come together! And, I am so very excited about it all. My dear friend Pat and sister Linda and of course my kids and dear husband have been working so hard with me to get the shop ready for opening. Look for more pictures soon but... I'll have to be careful not to reveal too much! LOL.

Feedsacks and Linens

My husband and I ventured up to Pennsylvania to visit some friends and that is where I got these wonderful feedsacks and linens. They are from the 1930's to 1950's and are all in excellent shape. One of my favorites in the 1950's daisy wheel pattern. It is a slightly courser fabric but is so vibrant and fun! There are so many to share with you. Hello and welcome to my blog. Most of the post here will be about the story of my shop...Timeless Trends Boutique. I have been working towards getting it open for over a year and have enjoyed the many challenges and rewards along the way. There have been diversions from loved ones (I love and miss you Mom). Budget delays - lots of those. Lifestyle changes that had to take place and many other interesting twists and lots of lessons to learn from. Here is where I would like to share some of the many interesting stories of what it took to reach the goal. We are almost there. I can almost see the "GRAND OPENING SIGN" flying high on the store front. Hope you enjoy the story through my posts here.

How did we get here?? Well, one day we were driving through a local town and I saw a "For Sale" on the front of an old building. Being the curious sort, I called about it and convinced my husband that we should go have a look see. Of course once I explained it came with a very large garage that had electric and could hold a good many of his cars....he agreed. Once in the building...well I don't want to sound cliche' but...it was love at first sight. Something about it made us both decide we had to save this wonderful old structure.

SO....we bought it. The building was a very old furniture

store in Thurmont, Maryland and is where the shop is to

be located. It use to be the Creager furniture store.

One of the longest running family business, started

approximately 1840. The family sold furniture when

they weren't arranging funeral services.
Apparently is was very common for undertakers to also be in the furniture business.

Inside the building, there was quite a bit of water damage from a leaky roof and some busted pipes that had not been drained by one of the previous owners. The hardwood floors were so damage that they lifted more than 15 inches up off the sub-floor and were twisted. Luckily my son Chris refinishes hardwood floors for a living.

There is a beautiful stairway to the second

floor. It even has an old freight elevator in it! Luckily my husband is an elevator mechanic!! :)
